Author Catherine Schwaab uses her extensive experience as a fashion journalist to break the subject down into lively and concise sections that provide the keys to understanding this popular subject. The book offers a chronology of the major trends of the twentieth century, as well as key dates-from Mary Quant's groovy miniskirt in the 1960s, to Jean-Paul Gaultier's men in skirts in the 1980s, to Alexander McQueen's low-cut jeans in the 1990s. Thirty designers that define fashion today are presented including household names like Marc Jacobs, Miuccia Prada, and Paul Smith as well as the designers behind the brands: Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga, Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons, and Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy. The author identifies the brands with staying power and explores the intermingling of fashion with cinema, art, and technology. In conquering the common myth of "I have nothing to wear," Schwaab shows how to reinvent and recycle the best of fashion every day. Each style-from vintage classics to current innovations-allows the reader to identify his or her personal look amidst the recurrent runway themes: romantic, classic, sporty, eccentric, sophisticated, arty, or ultrasexy. Both men's and women's fashion are featured throughout.
An appendix of practical information completes this guide, with a glossary of key terms and concepts, museums and trade shows to visit, as well as fashion schools around the world and a selected bibliography. Illustrated "looks" and fashion items appear throughout the book.
