During the reigns of Queen Victoria and her son, King Edward VII, almost everyone either had servants or had been one at some stage of their life. Many of those 'in service' came from backgrounds where life was tough; becoming a servant meant cold and hunger were less of a problem than boredom and lack of freedom. Living conditions for the gentry, however, were not necessarily as grand as they had been, particularly after the agricultural slump of the 1860s. Some lived in reduced circumstances, while trying to keep up appearances. With a continued interest in the TV drama Downton Abbey, here we take a further look at the lives led by the master and mistress of grand houses, and those who toiled below stairs to keep them comfortable.
