Wildlife is very important to the livelihood of rural and urban populations, both for its direct contribution of valuable proteins and for its contribution to income generation. This FAO Conservation Guide reviews the many modes in which wildlife contributes to food security in Africa.
It analyses in depth the role of wildlife as a source of food, including bushmeat and other wild animal products, as well as ways in which wildlife contributes indirectly to food security by providing opportunities for income generation such as trade in wildlife and ecotourism. A number of promising emerging wildlife production systems, including wildlife ranching, farming and domestication, are introduced and discussed. The book ends with an expression of strong confidence that wildlife can contribute significantly to food security in Africa when proper measures and approaches are taken.
