This book is the product of more than thirty years' practical experience, during which Alain Bougearel has "read the cards" for clients in Toulouse and Avignon, France, using ordinary playing cards as his main tool.
He first codified his understanding in 1997, in a practical guide to divination with a shortened deck of 32 cards. At last, and after teaching many others, he has published an "initiation into French cartomancy - divination by decks of 32 and 52 cards," first in French and now in English translation, augmented by a historical introduction that situates the method within the broader context of French cartomancy.
In Alain's hands the cards' language gradually becomes intelligible to us, in an experimental way through which the future itself hones our understanding of their words.
