Si certaines sont impressionnantes et effrayantes, d'autres sont drôles et rassurantes !
It was a war between france and prussia in 1870 that forced my family to leave its native province of lorraine.
Another conflict, the great war of 1914-1918, was to lead us to champagne. we needed, after so much upheaval, to put down new roots. this was achieved quite rapidly, thanks in no small measure to the historic significance of the properties we managed to acquire. these were :
ù the château of la marquetterie, near epernay, a former residence of the writer jacques cazotte, and a mecca of regional hospitality in the time of the monarchy ;
ù our cellars in the place saint-nicaise in reims, where we became the successors of the benedictine monks who had used them to produce a champagne of repute two centuries before our arrival ;
ù the residence of the counts of champagne, home to the most influential family in the region when they came to reims to attend the coronations of the kings of france.
This book tells the story of how we established ourselves in the champagne region, and sheds some light on our special relationship with the wine that bears our name.
