This book provides a simplified description of the procedures to be used to perform an analysis of hydrological data within a multifractal framework. After a review of multifractal theory and the presentation of one model for identifying scale invariance properties, examples of applications to rainfall and discharge time series are given. It is mainly intended for researchers, engineers and teachers in this field, at the French and international level.
Pietro Bernardara is research engineer at the National Laboratory of Hydraulics and Environment at Chatou (EDF, Research and Development). After a PhD on scale invariance in rainfall fields modelling, he was involved during a post doctorate period (2004-06) at Cemagref and Cereve in researches linking hydrology and multifractal theory.
Michel Lang, hydrologist, is at the head of the Hydrology and Hydraulics research unit at Cemagref Lyon (HHLY). He works on extreme design fl ood estimate.
Éric Sauquet, researcher in hydrology at Cemagref (HHLY), is especially involved into the probabilistic analysis of river regimes and its space and time variability.
Daniel Schertzer, from École des ponts et chaussées (ENPC) at Marne-La-Vallée, is one of the most experienced researcher in multifractal analysis.
Ioulia Tchiguirinskaia, researcher in mathematics and hydrology at Cereve (ENPC), carried out multifractal analysis on numerous environmental data series.
